The workshop subject matter will deal with conservation surveys and the speakers will be Mr. Douglas Burnell LLS
and Mr. Duane Hyde from Southeast Land Trust (SELT). Doug and Duane will share useful insights from their lifetimes
of experience in surveying and preserving conservation parcels and easements. Topics covered will include: survey
elements important to different funding sources and involved parties; land trust survey standards; uses for surveys such
as baseline documentation, GIS databases, appraisals, title reports and insurance, conveyance, and monitoring and
enforcement actions; and, of course, real life surveying war stories.

Doug Burnell is a retired surveyor but still licensed in NH & ME. He is the board president and
volunteer lands consultant with the Upper Saco Valley Land Trust, serving eight towns in NH and three
in Maine in the Mt. Washington Valley. Doug has been a frequent Case Studies presenter and a
longstanding Active Member of NHLSA. Doug has gained multiple perspectives in conserving lands
from producing numerous lands surveys for many different agencies and organizations throughout his
50-year career in private practice, as a conserved-woodlands owner himself, and from his ten years
with USVLT.

Duane Hyde is the Land Conservation Director of the Southeast Land Trust of New Hampshire.
In 2013, Duane joined the SELT team after working 13 years for the NH Chapter of The Nature
Conservancy, where he served as the Chapter’s Director of Conservation Programs. During Duane’s
22-year land conservation career, he has completed hundreds of projects conserving tens of thousands
of acres and a wide range of natural resource, ranging from working farms to wetlands to drinking water
supplies to important wildlife habitat. Duane also served as the lead acquisition agent and grants
administrator on behalf of the Great Bay Resource Protection Partnership and was a founding board
member of the NH Land Trust Coalition, where he continues to serve as the Chair of its Outreach and
Education Committee. Prior to land conservation, Duane worked for nearly 10 years as a professional
town planner in Virginia and New Hampshire. Duane is a graduate of the University of Massachusetts
Natural Resources Program and holds a master’s degree in Environmental Planning from Virginia Tech.

SELT was the recipient of the 2021 NHLSA Land Ethics For Tomorrow (LEFT) award, which Duane will accept from
Doug, acting as NHLSA’s Awards Chair, as part of the proceedings.

Attendees will be eligible for 0.5 CEU’s from the Board of Licensure for their participation.
