Join us for some woodland education, food, and surveying adventures on June 25th. Our Summer Quarterly is being held at the Baldwin Center at the Fox State Forest in Hillsborough, located at 309 Center Road.

This exceptional venue offers an educational center and expansive grounds covering 1,445 acres of woodlands and wetlands (although we don’t anticipate hiking that far out!) with ample parking for attendees.

Please Note:

  • We’re hopeful for a perfectly sunny day, but if rain is in the forecast, the event is still on; just be prepared to bring a raincoat or umbrella.
  • Please bring your own lawn chair if you would like to sit at various times.
  • Other items to consider bringing include sunscreen and tick repellent, a pen, paper, and clipboard for notes, and a “refreshment” or two.

The day will be broken down into four events:

Session #1: Presented by Inge Seaboyer
Brief History of the Caroline A. Fox Research and Demonstration Forest

For 93 years Fox Forest has been the State of NH’s research and demonstration forest. Research has ranged from provenance testing to Continuous Forest Inventory, to charcoal making, to forest inventory analytical tools, to applied research and collaborative projects – like a Forest Service Chaga study.  Twenty-two miles of trails allow the public to experience working forest, and programming for both the public and professionals provide natural resource educational opportunities at this hidden gem of a State Forest. Learn a bit more from Fox Program Forester Inge Seaboyer.

Inge holds a Bachelor of Science in Forestry from UNH.  She has been with the Division of Forests & Lands, Forest Management Bureau since 1985, beginning on a Resource Inventory crew.  From 1986 to 2007 she was part of joint Forestry & Wildlife Program, working with the Fish & Game Department’s State Lands Biologist to restore and improve wildlife habitat both on DNCR lands and Wildlife Management Areas through both commercial timber sales and “noncommercial” projects, like old field restoration.  She is currently the Program Forester here at the Fox Research & Demonstration Forest and is also the lead field forester for forest management of DNCR lands in the southwestern corner of the state.

Session #2: Presented by Kyle Lombard
Forest Health Show and Tell

There is a wide variety of pests and pathogens taking their bite of trees in New Hampshire. This presentation will be outdoors and “hands on” to take a closer look at some of the forest health issues most active today.

Kyle is a forest entomologist and the NH Division of Forests and Lands, Forest Health Program manager.  Kyle has worked on emerald ash borer, hemlock woolly adelgid, spruce budworm, beech leaf disease, and dozens of other defoliators and abiotic stressors in his 32 years with the forest health program.

Session #3: Presented by Hunterr Payeur
Witness Trees: Identification, Measurement, and Selection

This course will cover tree species identification (outdoor component weather permitting), common terminology and practice for measuring witness trees, and assessing tree health for selection. This course will also go over blazing boundary lines and locating old blazes.

Hunterr is a district manager for New England Forestry Consultants, Inc., where he has worked since 2018. He has been a NH Licensed Forester since 2019 and NH Licensed Land Surveyor since 2024. Hunterr has a Master of Forestry degree from Duke University with a certificate in GIS analysis and a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Richmond.

Session #4: Presented by Waypoint Technology Group
Bruce Bartels and Harry Shultz
Locating Treasures of the Forest using GNSS

This session will be interactive and hands-on using Trimble GNSS to locate items in a scavenger hunt game. We will start by explaining the RTK setup we will be using for corrections and going over the stakeout/navigate to workflows that can be used to locate the scavenger hunt items. We will then break up into groups of 8-10 to go out and locate and collect the items we hid in the forest. The group with the most items found will win a prize!

Bruce is the Geospatial Support Services Manager with Waypoint Technology Group, an authorized Trimble Geospatial & Mapping Distributor that services New York, New Jersey, and New England. In his current role, he coordinates all repairs as well as provides training, tech support, and sales assistance. Bruce has been working with Trimble equipment for 12 years, including 8 years in the Survey Industry.

Harry is the Vice President of Waypoint Technology Group where he has worked for the past sixteen years.  He is a licensed Professional Land Surveyor with over 25 years of experience using Trimble technology for high-accuracy data collection.  He is a licensed UAV pilot and certified by Trimble to provide professional training for all their Geospatial hardware and software solutions.  At Waypoint Technology Group Mr. Schultz likes to engage with their customers by providing customized training, support and consultation services to their customers.  Harry received his AAS in Land Surveying from Paul Smith’s college in the Adirondack mountains of NY.  Prior to Waypoint Technology Group he worked for a large Survey/Engineering firm where he worked as a land surveyor on projects all over the Northeastern portion of the United States.
