Effective Research Techniques

Ed will cover key research resources for surveyors in New Hampshire, good habits and techniques for challenging research projects, and effective methods for communicating research findings

Edward L. Rogers, PE, LLS has been involved in surveying for the last 30 years and started Rogers Engineering Solutions, LLC in 2005.  His experience on Boston’s Big Dig provided him with a unique perspective on roads, surveying, and the 4-dimensional puzzles they represent.  For the past 20 years he has focused on surveying and engineering projects in New Hampshire, taking some detours along the way including teaching high school trigonometry and serving as a member of the Housing Appeals Board.  Ed’s past presentations include “NH Road Research Part I”, “Turnpikes and County Roads”, and multiple case studies involving litigation.

Session #2: Presented by CATHERINE bERUBE

Deed and Plan Research Methodology and Resources

Catherine Berube is the Register of Deeds of Strafford County, NH.  Catherine graduated from the University of New Hampshire with a BA in History. She continued her education at Suffolk University Law School. After graduating, she clerked for the NH Superior Court and then began practicing law at Coolidge, PA where she became a partner. She went on to found her own law firm in Dover, NH with her husband F.X. Bruton; Bruton and Berube, PLLC. In addition to practicing law, Catherine has been an adjunct professor at UNH
for over 20 years teaching several law classes.

In 2014 Catherine took leave from the practice of law and ran for Strafford County Register of Deeds. She has been serving in this position since that time. She is currently President of the NH Registry of Deeds Association prior serving as Vice-President. Catherine has been very involved in her community, volunteering for several organizations. She has three adult children with her husband FX.

Session #3: Presented by A. Richard Vannozzi, MS, PLS

Surveying Research in the Digital Age

We can all agree that technology and computing have completely changed how we perform our measurement duties. Likewise, computers generally, and the internet specifically, have completely changed how we do our research.  This wave of change is also impacting on our practice much more than when the registry’s dusty old index books were replaced with a computer terminal connected to a searchable database of all the indexes.  Research is evolving and we can’t ignore it.

This presentation will cover an eclectic set of topics including the expanded role research plays in our work, new data sets and sources, the death of cursive, evolving standards of care in research, Cloud computing and AI.  At the conclusion of this presentation, attendees will have a greater understanding of the changing research environment and be introduced to a few emerging tools and strategies they may wish to leverage in their daily practice.

A. Richard Vannozzi, MS, PLS, Associate Professor, Surveying Engineering Technology, University of Maine
Mr. Vannozzi is a graduate of the University of Maine where, in 1984, he earned a BS in Forestry and, in 2006, earned an MS in Forestry, both with a surveying emphasis. Mr. Vannozzi has taught surveying across New England since 2003.  Currently, Mr. Vannozzi serves in the faculty of the Surveying Engineering Technology program at The University of Maine where he teaches courses across the curriculum both in the traditional classroom and online. He is registered as a Professional Land Surveyor in Massachusetts having first been licensed there in 1988 at the age of 25. He is a Past-President of the Massachusetts Association of Land Surveyors and Civil Engineers (MALSCE) and, in 1998, was recognized as MALSCE’s Surveyor of the Year. He is currently a co-chair of the National Society of Professional Surveyors (NSPS) Education Committee. He also served on the NSPS Board of Directors (FKA Board of Governors) representing Massachusetts from 2008-2019.  In 2017 he was named a fellow of NSPS. He serves as the faculty advisor to the NSPS Student Chapter at the University of Maine.  Mr. Vannozzi also maintains a small consulting practice that specializes in complex boundary, title, and zoning matters for select clients including attorneys and other Professional Land Surveyors.
