NHLSA SPRING QUARTERLY BUSINESS MEETING & SEMINAR

Our Spring Quarterly business meeting & seminar will be held at The Falls Event Center on Thursday, March 19th, located at 21 Front Street in Manchester.

With no Education Director at the start of the year, it falls on the Executive Committee to pull something together. President Mitchell heard from several members on varying topics. The lineup consists of representation from UNH GRANIT, the Registry of Deeds Laredo, and NRCS soil maps. In addtion, Paul Alfano will be returning for an encore presentation that was presented at the 50th Annual Meeting. Paul’s workshop was standing room only and he was glad to be asked back because after presenting, he always finds something he could have included, so look for some new information. The Quarterly Business Meeting will follow the seminar, however no dinner or speaker is planned, so members can get home after a long day of class.

Litigation by the Lake – Who Owns the Road?

This presentation traces the chain of title to a strip land within an 1889 subdivision along Lake Winnipesaukee in Alton. While conveyance of land abutting a road carries the presumption of ownership to the middle of the road, this presumption may be rebutted. Paul’s presentation contains several good examples of the sorts of things tending to rebut the presumption. The history of the property is quite colorful, culminating in a futile attempt to create fee title from nothing with a hastily prepared deed and a quick dash to the bank to have the signature notarized.

Paul J. Alfano, Esq.

Paul is a recognized authority on New Hampshire road law, including paper streets, discontinuances and ownership disputes. He has written leading articles on the subject and delivered numerous lectures over the past thirty years, and maintains a steady stream of bios and shorter articles on these topics. His law firm’s website is a rich source of information on public and private roads. Paul is admitted to practice in New Hampshire and both the federal and state courts. He is a graduate of Boston University School of Law and Harvard College. His law firm, Alfano Law Office, PLLC, is located in Concord, NH.

Presenting Laredo Land Records Document Search Engine Training

Wendy Hanson, Partner Relationship Manager

Starting her career in the land records management industry in 1996, Wendy provides a variety of expertise when assisting the Register’s Office. As a Partner Relationship Manager, she performs tasks such as testing, troubleshooting, and installing software. Once the office is technically configured, she trains staff members how to best use the AVID land records management system when processing documents as well as search products. Wendy then makes herself available for ongoing technical support to the county as they reach full recording capacity with their new recording system.

GRANIT 2020

NH GRANIT (www.granit.unh.edu) is the NH statewide public-facing GIS clearinghouse - creating, maintaining, and providing access to data that supports the work of state, regional, and local decision-makers. Based in the Earth System Research Center at the University of New Hampshire for the past 30 years, GRANIT services include data development, spatial analysis, image processing, cartography, and online mapping services. This talk will focus on data products that have been recently released through GRANIT, and new data to be collected in 2020. These include state-wide orthophotography (6" resolution), improved LiDAR for southeastern NH, new LiDAR derivitive products, and a statewide 2-foot topographic contour coverage. This will also be an opportunity to preview our modernized data portal under development on the the ArcGIS Online Open Data platform - an important enhancement to data delivery to our user communities.

Mary Martin, Project Manager

Mary has recently joined the GRANIT team as Program Manager. In her years in the Earth System Research Center at the University of New Hampshire, her work has focused on forest ecology. This work has ranged from the use of remote sensing data to study forest productivity and health, to her current roles in Information Management. In addition to project management and stakeholder outreach for GRANIT, she is the Information Manager for the Long-term Ecological Research (LTER) program at the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest in the White Mountains.

How NRCS Soil Maps were made and how to use Web Soil Survey

Karen will give a brief overview on NRCS soil production mapping and will point out key features to keep in mind when using the soil maps. Additionally, an in-depth talk on how to use Web Soil Survey will be provided.

Karen Dudley, Resource Soil Scientist

Karen started her career as a NHDOT highway surveyor and then moved on to Eric C Mitchell and Assoc as a septic designer/engineering tech. At Eric’s, Karen realized that she wanted to move further onto the world of soils (and working outside). Karen mapped soils for NRCS for 14 years before becoming a Resource Soil Scientist where she currently covers the state of NH in terms of technical soil services. Karen has a Masters in Natural Resources – Soil Science and an undergrad degree in Hydrology from UNH.
