ZBA Discusson

This session will provide a detailed look at the statutory criteria for matters before ZBAs, including appeals of administrative decisions, special exceptions, variances and equitable waivers. This session will also provide an in-depth discussion of how NH case law interprets the five variance criteria. Time will be devoted to participant questions.

Presenter: Christopher L. Boldt, Esq. is a partner at Donahue, Tucker & Ciandella, PLLC in the Firm’s Meredith offices where he concentrates his practice on real estate, land use/permitting and municipal law. Chris actively handles matters involving conveyance and title issues, boundary disputes, land use and development matters, conservation easements, municipal law and taxation throughout New Hampshire, matters before various state agencies including the BTLA, PUC, DES, and DOT, appeals to the New Hampshire Supreme Court, and mediation. Since February 2004, Chris has been appointed as a member of the NHBA Real Estate Section’s subcommittee in charge of reviewing and revising the New Hampshire Title Standards.  Chris is a frequent lecturer for the Local Government Center, the New Hampshire Office of Planning and Development, and the New Hampshire Bar Association. Chris has served as a Selectman and Planning Board Member and currently serves as Assistant Moderator in his home town of Sandwich, NH.

Creating Maps in CAD from Publicly Available Data

In this short workshop we will look at free public data sources. The discussion will include how to evaluate the data to determine source and accuracy. We will conclude by preparing a compiled CAD drawing from some of this public data.

Presenter: Michael Hammer, LLS 1036, formerly adjunct faculty at Wentworth Institute of Technology where he taught Survey I & II, Plan Reading and CAD to undergraduates in Civil Engineering and Construction Management. His experience includes a wide range of surveying projects throughout New England ranging from large development projects such as the Boston Seaport redevelopment, the Big Dig and the Boston Harbor Project to large boundary surveys in southern and central New Hampshire.

Tree Identification

Do you know the difference between a black birch or a yellow birch? Ever seen a buttonwood tree? Any idea how to distinguish a red maple from a soft maple or a rock maple or a sugar maple? Can you identify an old hemlock stump? Do you recognize the manner in which red pine stumps decay as opposed to white pine or other softwoods? How often do the calls for trees in an old deed ‘stump’ you?

Tree identification can be important to a surveyor particularly when deeds or plans refer to standing trees as monuments or accessories to monuments. In the past, many NH land surveyors came from a forestry background. Now that many have retired or passed on there are fewer surveyors with dendrology skills. Further, in some cases the identification of a tree or remnants thereof like a stump requires skills beyond dendrology, which is the science of tree and shrub identification.

This workshop will cover basic tree identification skills for the most common NH species and as time and evidence permits will illustrate some wood identification techniques at a nearby naturally wooded area, approximately 4 miles from Mitchell Hill. Each of us will be responsible for our own transportation during this site visit.

Presenter: Dennis D. McKenney, LLS 691, has 48 years’ experience and counting looking at trees and stumps for both forestry and land surveying projects. This work has taken him to every NH county and his clients have included the US Forest Service, NH Fish and Game, many municipalities and countless private land owners.

The Foundation will be holding its quarterly fundraising with a raffle and mini-silent auction. If you have an item you would like to donate for the raffle, please bring it along. The silent auction will have TSAS instruments up for bid. Proceeds from the raffle will benefit the Scholarship Fund, and proceeds from the silent auction will benefit the Robert G. Moynihan Education Fund. The Foundation has awarded their spring scholarships and have invited two Moran Family recipients, one Richie Ladd recipient, and can we get a drum roll?....our first recipient of the Robert G. Moynihan Education Fund will be announced.
